Modern field service activities – such as those related to GIS mapping, forestry or general security – are more demanding and intensive than ever before. Therefore, field personnel need to be able to rely on a highly resilient mobile computer that’s more than capable of enduring all the rigours of every-day data capture requirements.

Additionally, field professionals are now demanding PDAs that are not only feature rich but also available at a cost that’s capable of delivering a speedy return on investment. So, with these mission specific and cost-critical requirements in mind, we believe Handheld Europe’s brand new ultra-rugged Nautiz X7 mobile computer hits the sweet spot perfectly.

This is because, in the Nautiz X7, Handheld has not only created a device with an impressive combination of cutting-edge integrated features housed in a highly ruggedised device, it has also brought the whole package to market at a particularly attractive price point.

The Nautiz X7 is the third addition to Handheld’s Nautiz product line that also includes the X5 and the eTicket. This latest super-tough offering is IP67-rated and is tough enough to endure repeated drops from 1.2 meters. It is also impervious to both dust and water, is able to endure high levels of vibration and can even operate in extreme temperatures from as low as minus 30 degrees celsius right up to 60 degrees celsius.

However, although the PDA is an impressively rugged device, it weighs in at a surprisingly light 490 grams, making it compact and comfortable enough to operate with one hand. This has to be a most welcome addition to the armoury of any user required to work long shifts.

As for the visuals, the PDA’s transmissive micro reflective technology touchscreen with 3.5-inch VGA display provides extremely sharp and clear resolution, even when working outdoors on a sunny day, while its user-friendly numeric keypad makes the device very easy to operate in just about any environment.

Handheld Europe recognises that performance begins with speed and power. So, with this in mind, the Nautiz X7 comes with a super fast 806 megahertz processor, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 professional operating system and is fitted as standard with 128 megabytes of RAM and 4 gigabytes of built-in Flash storage.
The Nautiz X7 also comes with a long-life battery able to operate up to 12 hours on a single charge; making the unit more than powerful enough for all-day intensive use.

Other advanced features include everything from a 3 mega-pixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, to 3G cellular phone capabilities, Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, GPS, digital compass and a G-sensor that can measure speed, vibration and rotation.

In addition, the unit includes a USB host and 9-pin RS232 for direct connections with geo-technical and other instruments. It also includes a standard digital input and output expansion slot for additional storage or accessories, such as RFID or barcode scanners.

But the benefits don’t stop there. An additional purchase incentive comes in the form of Hemisphere GPS’s Kenaz DGPS receiver. This device is able to provide high accuracy position computation, and has been especially customised for use with the Nautiz X7. And, like the Nautiz X7 itself, the Kenaz receiver is small and compact, yet robust enough for even the most demanding field service environments.

All these features add up to a mobile computer that’s packed with state-of-the-art advancements in PDA technology, offering a convincing mix of power, functionality and ruggedness. We think this latest offering from Handheld Europe is well worth further investigation.
